Learn To Heal
About ten months before my mother was diagnosed with cancer, I heard the message below. It was incredibly helpful for me personally as I headed into all of that experience. I had no idea what was coming but this message transformed my understanding of suffering and helped me to cope with the journey that my mom took. Likewise, it has helped me when dad received his cancer diagnosis. I don’t want this content to seem platitudinal at all but perhaps it will be of some help to you as you walk through the sickness, suffering or grief journey.
I invite you to listen to the audio of the message that is entitled “Subjected In Hope.” It was preached by John Piper immediately following the diagnosis of Pastor Matt Chandler back in 2009. Matt was around 30 years old and collapsed on Thanksgiving morning in his home. It was later discovered that he had a massive brain tumor. His mentor was John Piper and so they brought him in to speak to the congregation while he was facing surgery and the recovery afterwards. They had no idea at that time, when Piper spoke, whether or not Matt would live. I found it to be theologically astute and incredibly grace-filled in the midst of such uncertainty. It reframed the whole subject of suffering for me. That, coupled with the comfort and peace of the Holy Spirit, have taken me through many times of sadness over the loss of my mother.
The first set of notes below go with Piper’s message. You are welcome to download them and follow along if you decide to listen to it. No pressure if you don’t. Just simply a resource.
The second PDF focuses on what the Scriptures teach us about the subject of healing.
